TESTING PROCEDURES

 1. First make sure the furnace blower is NOT running. Now remove BOTH collector cells from your Electro Air air cleaner.

2. Put the door back on, turn the air cleaner on and see if the light comes on for 30 seconds and then turns off. If it does you have an air flow sensor built into your air cleaner and that part is working. If the light STAYS on and does NOT turn back off you do NOT have an air flow sensor in your model.

3. Leave the air cleaner turned on. Now get the furnace blower running. You can do this by turning either the thermostat fan AUTO - ON switch to ON or turning the heat on and raising your thermostat set point.

IF THE INDICATOR LAMP COMES ON & STAYS ON

The problem is with one OR both of your collector cells. If this is the case wash both of your collector cells, wait 48 hours and try it again with both collector cells. If it works now you are done.

IF THE LAMP GOES OUT WITH THE CELLS INSTALLED AFTER YOU HAVE CLEANED THEM AND WAITED 48 HOURS FOR THEM TO DRY, TRY THE TEST BELOW

NOTE: For each retest you MUST turn off the blower, turn off the air cleaner for 1 minute, turn the air cleaner back on and wait another minute before turning on the furnace blower again.

1. Place a single cell all the way to the front of the air cleaner and retest. The cell must touch the back side of the door to make contact with the chrome piece in the center of the door. Turn on the air cleaner, wait 1 minute and then turn the blower back on.

2. Now remove that cell and try it with JUST the other cell placed all the way to the front of the air cleaner.

3. If the indicator lamp GOES OUT with one of the cells installed then THAT cell has a short in it.

4. Remove that faulty cell and carefully study it. Look for bent aluminum plates, broken ionizer wires or foreign objects stuck between any of the plates. Remove the foreign object, straighten the bent plate or replace the broken ionizer wire.

5. Retest that cell. If you see nothing wrong with it, try shaking the cell. Sometimes a single plate will break loose from the cell. If you have a broken plate or find nothing wrong and it still shows a shorted cell, you need to replace that collector cell.

Below is a link to a diagnostic tree. Try it once you have exhausted all the tests above and it still is NOT working properly.
To test if your Electro Air electronic air cleaner is working properly when you are done, the cells are installed and the light is on, get the furnace blower running then slap the return (cold in winter) ductwork with the palm of your hand several times. This will loosen up some dirt in the ductwork. That dirt will enter the air cleaner and the air cleaner will temporarily begin making snapping noises. This is an indication it is working.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR ELECTRO AIR AIR CLEANER

Electronic air cleaners must be washed every 30 days to maintain peak performance.

1. Turn off power to air cleaner and furnace.

2. Remove collector cells, prefilters and post filters (if you have those). Carbon after filters or post filters are NOT cleanable so do not wash them in water. Post filters should be vacuumed and carbon after filters need REPLACED every 90 days.

3. Soak prefilters and collector cells for 30 minutes in a laundry tub filled with warm water mixed with electric dishwasher detergent.

4. Thoroughly rinse the collector cells and prefilters with clean water.

5. Let the collector cells and prefilters drip dry for 30 minutes before reinstalling them.

6. Turn the air cleaner back on.

7. Turn the furnace back on.

NOTE: the air cleaner will not function properly until it is completely dry. This will take 24 to 48 hours. During that time it may snap, crackle and pop. It will not damage anything or cause a fire while that is happening.
